There is no excuse for any of us who have both eyes, both arms, a good mind and both legs. After reading the story about Natalie du Toit, whose theme is “be everything you want to be”, it makes me want to do a better job of reaching higher.
According to her
website, she had already had brushes with success in the Olympics by almost qualifying for the 2000 swim team at the age of 16 but in 2001 she was on her motor scooter when she was hit.
Her website declares, “The scene was gruesome; the devastation was immediately obvious. ” I kept saying, “I’ave lots my leg, I’ve lost my leg”.
She has recently qualified for the 800 meter freestyle and will participate with one leg. Before her accident, a coach gave her a poem which according to her did not mean much until following the accident. This is what hangs in her room:
The tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goals;
The tragedy of life lies in not having goals to reach for.
It is not a disgrace not to reach for the stars,
But it is a disgrace not to have stars to reach for.
Those of us with all of our limbs have no excuse.
